McPherson Keynote Lecture

Inspired Breathing Virtual Conference 2021 Speaker: Dr. Stephen Shafran

The McPherson Keynote Lecture honours the memory of Lilian and Russell McPherson. Lilian McPherson was a nurse who worked in the Fort San and Prince Albert TB sanatoria. Dr. Russell McPherson was a physician who spent his entire career of 35 years fighting tuberculosis.

Dr. Russell McPherson joined the medical staff of the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis League in 1929 at the Fort Qu'Appelle Sanatorium (Fort San). He served at the Prince Albert Sanatorium for seven years and the Saskatoon Sanatorium for 18 months before returning to Fort San.

Dr. McPherson enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in 1941 and was discharged after the war ended with the rank of Major. He was also awarded the M.B.E for his service (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire). He returned to Fort San following his discharge. In 1949 he transferred to the Saskatoon Sanatorium where he served as Medical Superintendent from 1959 until his retirement in 1964.

It is our great honour to commemorate the McPherson family’s generous contributions to lung health in Saskatchewan through the McPherson Keynote Lecture.

Ferguson Keynote Lecture

Inspired Breathing Virtual Conference 2021 Speaker: Dr. Tara Lohmann

The Ferguson Keynote Lecture commemorates Dr. Robert George Ferguson - physician, teacher, scientist, persuader, father of the Saskatchewan Tuberculosis program and humanitarian. When George Ferguson and Tuberculosis met in Saskatchewan in October 1917, all the ingredients were there for epic achievement.

After his appointment as acting medical superintendent of the first provincial sanatorium, Dr. Ferguson became secretary of the Saskatchewan Anti-Tuberculosis Commission and was thereby able to plan his lifetime campaign against the disease. On January 1, 1929, Saskatchewan was the first jurisdiction in North America to provide free tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment.

The Saskatchewan Thoracic Society established the R.G. Ferguson Lecture in 1994. We are pleased to continue this commemoration as our Ferguson Keynote Lecture.
